SF SPCA invites San Franciscans and their furry friends to DOGMA, an SF-style street party in support of pet adoptions, happening on Saturday, September 24th.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 14, 2011
The SF SPCA is throwing a street party, San Francisco style, on Saturday, September 24th from 11 am to 3 pm. Octavia Street between Hayes and Fell will be closed to cars, so local animal lovers and their companions can mix and mingle freely. The event, called DOGMA: Live in SF. Love in SF. Made in SF., includes an adoption area, advice from pet experts, booths from local small businesses and a talent show.
DOGMA is all about the San Francisco ethos; namely, San Franciscans deep-rooted belief in community, personal and social responsibility, looking locally for inspiration, and having a holistic philosophy and approach to life.
We know how much San Franciscans care about making a positive contribution to the community and to the world, says Jennifer Lu, Communications Manager for the SF SPCA. DOGMA will bring people and animals together to celebrate the great things about our city. Whether its helping an animal find a new home, finding locally handmade pet-inspired products, treating your doggie to a massage or learning about ways you and your pet can be green, this street party fits in perfectly with the SF dogma.
Dogma is a great opportunity for cat, dog and bunny adoption. Furry cuties from SF SPCA and its rescue partners will be there waiting to meet the right person to give them a new home.
Experts will be on-site at the Ask a Vet and Ask a Trainer booths. Everyone is invited to stop by with any questions they have about their pets health or behavior.
Best of all, DOGMA is a great opportunity for proud pet parents to show off their pets star quality by entering them in the Pet Talent Contest, from 12:30 – 1:30pm. Open to animals of all kinds, winners will receive prizes that they and their pets will both love.
You know your pet is THE MOST AMAZING, now show everyone else. Or, show up in a show-stopping costume – thats a talent too! says Lu.
The party will also feature a doggy kissing booth, bodywork for people and dogs, the KFOG street team, locally made pet products and more.
SF SPCA supporters who make a donation of $250 or more on sfspca.org will have their pets photo featured in the window of a Pet Food Express store.
Supporters can also make a $10 donation to the SF SPCA by texting DOGMA to 27722, thanks to mGive. The small print: Charges will appear on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your prepaid balance. All purchases must be authorized by account holder. Message and Data Rates May Apply. Nothing makes Kristie Kingsland happier than spending the day with her favorite furry friends. From wagging tails to wet doggy kisses – nothing beats the unconditional love of a pet.
As the owner of As the Tail Wags in Oviedo, Kingsland has definitely found her niche. After working as a groomer for Faux Paws for several years, she made her dream a reality and purchased the existing salon on West Broadway a little more than a year ago.
Kingsland laughs whenever people ask her about the whimsical name of the business, which she credits her husband, Jamie, in naming.
We were trying to name the salon and I had had a particularly interesting day with people professionally and personally. I said to my husband that my day felt like As the World Turns, it was like a soap opera. And he said, Its like, As the Tail Wags, and that was it, she said, with a laugh.
In keeping with the soap opera theme, all grooming packages play off of the business name, such as the full groom, called The Bold and the Beautiful and The Guiding Light, which features a mini or light grooming session. For those in need of only a bath, teeth brushing and ear cleaning, the salon offers The Soap Opera.
Kingsland said she first became interested in grooming several years ago while working at a veterinary office within PetSmart.
I was watching the trainers there so much they asked me if I wanted to learn, she said.
Kingsland said she was hooked once she attended the PetSmart Grooming Academy.
A lot of other people intern under other experienced groomers, but I was lucky enough to go through PetSmart and be trained by two fabulous women who had been groomers for more than 20 years, Kingsland said.
Kingsland said As the Tail Wags sets itself apart from other salons because of the level of expertise and commitment of the grooming staff who have a wonderful way with animals.
We have all been grooming for at least five years and are experienced. Kristen Eppestein is finishing up her certification for Pet Massage Therapy, she said. We pride ourselves on developing long-lasting relationships with pets and the pet parents.
Kingsland jokingly refers to assistant shop manager and senior groomer Andy Ratiner as the Cat Whisperer.
He is the most patient, kind, easy going guy, she said. I have learned a great deal of patience from him.
Kingsland said the business has become a family affair because each of her four children contributes in some way. From 15-year-old Megan to Justin, 18, Tyler, 19, and Morgan, 22, everyone jumps in and works the reception desk, helps keep the business clean and walks the dogs when needed, she said.
Pet care goes beyond basic bathing and brushing at As the Tail Wags. Most salon packages include conditioning, nail trimming, ear cleaning and teeth brushing.
Since groomers handle the dogs so much, they are also aware of changes in pet health, Kingsland said.
My hand is always on your pet, she said. We have actually caught cancer in the early stages … and weve caught ear infections early on. We know our pets, like Titan [a Goldendoodle] for instance, we caught when something was wrong [he had swallowed a sock] and he had to go into surgery.
Kingsland also prides herself in being able to work with dogs that have had issues with grooming elsewhere.
We have managed to work with dogs that had to be sedated during grooming and they no longer need that, she said. We have a lot of patience and we are able to plan our days and [set] aside the right time to do things. We will come in Sunday to do a dog that cant be around other dogs, for instance.
The Young the Restless puppy package allows the pet to get used to the grooming process.
We take as long as it takes, she said.
Kingsland said she is thrilled to be able to work with pets and their owners every day.
Its like not coming to work; I love everybody here, she said as she looked around the room full of dogs. They add a lot of happiness and companionship. The kids laugh because when I get home I give the dogs so much attention. They are happy to see me … how great is that?
