Whoever said its hard to make games has never met Cassie. This
five-year-old girl, along with her father, designed a point and
click adventure game in just a single weekend. Sissys Magical
Ponycorn Adventure has since been played worldwide and has been
nominated for several awards.

Best point-n-click adventure Ive played in a long time,
gushes Ron Gilbert, famed creator of the games Manic Manson and The
Secret of Monkey Island.

If youve been unfortunate enough not to see this deliciously
fun game yet, now is your chance. The Digital Game Museum will be
exhibiting the game at this years Maker Faire, May 19th and 20th,
at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. The Digital Game Museum focuses on
the preservation and celebration of classical gaming, examining
everything from arcade games in Japan to the birth of computer
games right here in the USA. This year, they have chosen to
highlight Cassies magical masterpiece. The game will be playable
on large screens, and information about the game and its birth will
be readily available. The exhibit will also feature merchandise,
real Ponycorns, and original art from the creator herself. This
game is quickly finding itself a place in gaming history, and the
museum is welcoming it with open arms.

If Ponycorns seem a little too sweet for your tastes, the
Digital Game Museum has other ways to explore the world of gaming.
Another exhibits will feature the history of adventure gaming and
will offer playable demos. Discover games by LucasArts and Sierra,
from a time where point and click was a major category in gaming.
To get more into the nuts and bolts of games, other exhibits will
feature manuals and diagrams of how certain games are put together.
Look at how the museum takes care of these too often forgotten
relics and enjoy games of yesteryear.

Truly, there is an indulgence for every sort of gamer here.
Whether the focus is gaming in history, playing, or the mechanics,
visitors will be able to find something to immerse themselves in at
the Digital Game Museum booth.

Lower East Side

Through June 3

For his fourth solo exhibition at Reena Spaulings Fine Art, the British Conceptual painter Merlin Carpenter, a perennial malcontent, is settling a score with its owners, John Kelsey and Emily Sundblad, by tricking out their gallery to resemble one of the retail spaces of an institution he heartily detests: the Tate Modern in London.

The gallery’s slightly elevated show space is blocked off with vaguely familiar dark-stained doors labeled “No Re-entry.” Beyond them lies a fairly convincing, if scaled-down and semi-functioning, facsimile of the Tate Modern’s cafe-bookstore, complete with low, square tables, black metal chairs and a bit of a banquette; a re-creation of the museum’s memorably narrow counter area outfitted with paper cups, drinks and packaged food printed with the Tate brand. (Appropriate to Mr. Carpenter’s view of the institution, much of it is rotting.) Also included are bright pink visitor comment cards and a large photomural that approximates the cafe’s Thames River view.

A small bookstore area concentrates on Spaulings-specific items: books by the Bernadette Corporation (the collective that Mr. Kelsey helped found in 1994); postcards of paintings by Mr. Carpenter and, for the home, two pillowcases printed with pages of signatures from the gallery’s sign-in book.

The motivation for “Tate Café” can be discovered in an 18-page interview-cum-press-release that Mr. Kelsey and Ms. Sundblad conducted with Mr. Carpenter. Alternately tedious, self-indulgent and insightful, it covers the misunderstandings and hurt feelings surrounding the dealers’ appropriation of Mr. Carpenter’s work for their contribution to “Pop Life,” a 2009 exhibition at the Tate Modern (in which they participated as an artist named Reena Spaulings). One of the offending works is a pair of tights printed with phrases from Mr. Carpenter’s graffiti paintings (“Die Collector Scum”) that was exhibited in the Tate’s cafe and is on display here.

This exercise in institutional critique as payback is all a bit hermetic and self-referential. But the cafe is a great place to sit and perhaps wade through the interview, savoring the public-private tension between the slightly mysterious labor-intensive environment and the attempted let’s-talk-it-out transparency of the printed words.

Morgan 4/4 The First 75 Years, by Michael Palmer.

Published by the Crowood Press

The Morgan Motor Company itself is batting just over a century in cricketing terms, but the Morgan 4/4 as an automobile has been 75 years in production and is surely the very DNA of this traditional manufacturer. Even today that 4/4 look is recognizable in the very latest designs leaving the factory.

Morgan 4/4 The First 75 Years takes the reader from conception and development through the full history of production and even gives a glimpse at future departures.

From the old flat-grill fronted 4/4s of the nineteen-thirties to the waterfall grill design that still carries that particular Morgan look even in todays Ford Zetec SE engined Aero Racing Competition 4/4 its all in here with interesting Owners Experience inserts that colour the authors views.

To this day, all Morgans are still handmade in the true sense of the word and the tradition of craft is alive and well at the factory. This book clearly pays homage to this fact with its behind-the-scenes look within the production facility, located in the small town in England, where Charles Morgan, his father and his grandfather have kept the family business alive even through troubled economic times and the whims of changing fashion and fancies.

Motor competition in its many forms – trials, mud-plugs, sprints, Rallys, time trials, hill-climbs and full-bore road and track racing – were always relished by Morgan 4/4 owners, and this is well covered by author and Morgan aficionado Michael Palmer.

The photography, from various sources, featured on almost every page, is crisp and well reproduced. Morgan enthusiasts will relish this look at their 4/4s.

French Curves, produced by the Mullin Automotive Museum

Published by Coachbuilt Press, Philadelphia Mullin Automotive Museum.

This book, though well designed with very pleasing graphics and superb photography by Michael Furman and wonderful historical references, will not appeal to many motoring enthusiasts.

However, if you have a hankering for art-deco, the curvaceous and sensuous shapes of prewar French automobiles or the marques of Delahaye, Delage and Talbot-Lago then this is a book you should not be without. In fact, I would go as far as to say buy it now in case it goes out of print! Peter W. Mullin, creator of the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, Calif., has put out this wonderful publication and spared no expense in its production. His passion is evident.

The authorship of French Curves includes: Claude Figoni, the son of Joseph Figoni, the originator of the carrossiers Figoni Falaschi; world-renowned expert of French auto design Richard Adatto; and editor and writer Shana Hinds. Their combined efforts embrace the pure and elegant designs of Delahaye, Delage and Talbot-Lago during an era when auto-mobiles were elegant, the rich were indulgent, motor racing required true courage and auto-mobile design was for beauty in the eye of the beholder not the safety of the driver or economy of operation.

The remarkable works and histories of Émile Delahaye, Louis Delage and Tony Lago which intertwined with the amazing design and coachwork of Figoni Falaschi during the 30s, 40s and 50s is well covered in this book.

Their fluid lines and delicious styling is evident on almost every page.

This book is not only well written and factual it is, just like the automobiles in question, very pleasing to the eye. Art Deco and British Car Design, by Barrie Down

Published by Veloce Publishing

Once again Veloce Publishing has brought out a niche market automobile book which the UK publication house seems to do with surprising regularity.

At first glance this subject might be considered just for the few to whom art deco and British car design is a subject of great interest. However, the more one pursues the pages the more the subject matter intrigues.

Art Deco is well described by erstwhile Englishman and now Canadian author Barrie Down as An assertive modern style, developing in the 1920s and reaching its high point in the 1930s – a classical style in that – it ran to symmetry rather than asymmetry and to the rectilinear rather than the curvilinear; it responded to the demands of the machine and the new materials of the time. This may seem laborious to understand but it is well illustrated in this book and by the end becomes not only an education but a fascinating one.

The author leads us through this interesting time of social change as expressed from the point-of-view of the design of the automobiles of that era.

This publication is well illustrated and such marques as Bentley, Jowett, Lagonda, Standard, Triumph, Hillman, Rapier, Singer, Daimler, Rolls-Royce and MG appear and remind the reader of an era when the individuality of an automobile could be art in itself, a far cry from today! I recommend this book more as a history of design, personal expression and social change as opposed to purely a bock about the automobiles of the Twenties and Thirties.

Special to The Sun Mike Tate is a motoring aficionado, retired racer, car historian, Concours judge and a past president of the Vintage Racing Club of British Columbia. AutoBooks is sponsored by Wilkinsons Automobilia (www. wilkinsonsautomobelia.com)

A former Stormont minister has called for departments to publish details of
overseas travel so that they are open to public scrutiny.

It comes after a Belfast Telegraph investigation revealed how ministers and
senior civil servants had enjoyed five-star hospitality while on expensive
trips around the world.

Some 20 overseas trips were made by Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster or
senior civil servants during 2009/10 and 2010/11, costing over £100,000.

However, it took nearly four months, and numerous Freedom of Information
requests and follow-ups, for the material to finally be disclosed.

Sir Reg Empey, who visited the United States and Canada six times in 18 months
whilst Employment Minister, said that it was important that travel details
were made available.

Perhaps departments should publish the costs of these visits … rather than
waiting to be asked, which nearly always leads to the type of
sensationalised story published, he said. Also, these visits far from
being holidays are, in fact, very gruelling.

Sir Empey said it was time for a debate on the matter.

This is how international relationships are built up, he added. There is no
alternative to this.

But we need to decide if we want such relationships to be established or not.

Details of DETIs overseas travel were released on Wednesday nearly three
months overdue.

However, unlike the other departments and despite being requested to do so
DETI did not release any details of hotels used.

The most expensive trip was made in March 2010 to Washington, New York and
Houston in Texas by Ms Foster.

Travel cost £6,366 while the unidentified hotels cost £867. The reason for the
trip was listed only as departmental business.

According to the documents, Ms Foster made a further 10 overseas trips in the
two-year period.

These included:

Toronto and Montreal in Canada between June 28 and 30, 2009. The trip cost £5,346.
Again it was listed only as departmental business,

Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore in India from September 20 to 25, 2009. Travel cost
£3,916 while the hotel stay was £510,

San Francisco from June 20 to 24, 2010. The trip cost £4,582,

And China in November 2011, again on departmental business,
costing £4,115.

According to the documents, several trips were also made by the departments
senior civil servants.

One official travelled to Brussels and Luxembourg in June 2010 for a meeting
at a cost of £1,696.

A second visit to Brussels, in March 2011, cost a further £1,094.

Another £1,667 was spent flying out an official to Charlottesville in the
United States for a leadership course in September 2009, while a two-day
telecoms infrastructure conference in Brussels would cost £1,130.

A spokeswoman for DETI said that promoting trade and tourism around the world
is a vitally important aspect of Ms Fosters work.

The minister therefore participates in an annual programme of multi-sector
trade missions to strengthen economic relations between Northern Ireland and
other countries and support our businesses to grow their exports, the
spokeswoman added.

The reality is that Northern Ireland is not large enough to rely solely on
domestic markets …

That means the minister needs to be overseas selling Northern Ireland as a
good place to live, work, invest and visit.

The overseas programme is continually reviewed to maximise Northern Irelands
position as an attractive location for inward investment and tourism.

Evaluating the success of missions is a long-term and ongoing process, she
said.
